This Swine Life: Pig Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Mayor.
It might not have been at the identical stature as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued from the start of the beginning of a current administration.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a prosperous future without fear.”
This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “six seven” – originating from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently declared “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to begin the festive period,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Every time, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and cafecito as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
