Slot Offers No Excuses and Vows to Plot Way From Slump
Liverpool's head coach declared he needed to “look at myself” following Liverpool suffered a sixth defeat in 7 Premier League matches on their own turf against Forest and affirmed he would discover a solution from the champions’ slump.
Nottingham Forest, in the relegation zone before kick off, produced the largest victory at Anfield in their club records as the Merseyside club slipped to an 8th defeat in 11 matches in every tournament. The most expensive domestic acquisition, the Swedish striker, was again unnoticeable and the home side contended Murillo’s first goal should have been ruled out for comparable grounds to the captain's chalked-off goal versus City prior to the national team pause. But Slot admitted the buck stopped with him and made no excuses.
“Nobody wants to listen to me now talking about officiating calls if you are defeated 3-0 in your own stadium to Forest,” stated the Reds' boss. “I should examine myself first and my squad, but it does show you how a goal can alter the flow of a game. Before I was just waiting for us to net a goal. Later we barely created any chances.
“Naturally there is a way out, particularly with the quality footballers we have. Regardless if you triumph or are beaten when you look back you are always thinking: ‘Where can we improve, in what aspects can we make changes?’ but that is different from questioning your abilities.
“I wish to stress I am accountable for the current defeats. You are responsible when you are victorious but also responsible when you are defeated. I can not come up with enough excuses for us to have the results we have. That is far from acceptable and I am to blame for that.”
The team's display fell apart as Slot made several offensive substitutions when pursuing the game. “It was the same on the road at Nottingham Forest last season,” he said. “I substituted Ibou [Ibrahima Konaté] out and put on the Portuguese forward and he found the net straight away to equalize at 1-1. Then it was courageous, now it’s likely stupid.”
The Anfield side previously were defeated in two successive at Anfield league games by Forest in 1963. The last time they lost consecutive league games by a 3-0 scoreline was in the mid-60s.
Slot said: “It was extremely poor. Competing at home, losing 3-0 no matter which opponent you encounter is a very, very bad outcome. Unexpected if you consider the first half-hour of the match. I did not witness us creating so many chances in the opening half-hour maybe the entire season, and the first time they entered in our penalty area they scored.
“It wasn’t at City, but in all other fixture we have been the controlling team and were capable to create opportunities. Recently it is nearly constantly that we fail to convert our opportunities and the ones we allow find the net.”
