Iconic Singer Barry Manilow Will Have Surgery for Lung Cancer.

Barry Manilow announced that he received a diagnosis with cancer of the lung and will be having a surgical procedure.

Spot Found in Initial Phase

The octogenarian performer, known for a string of beloved anthems from "I Write the Songs" has made him one of pop music’s enduringly popular showmen, will have an operation to extract a portion of his lung in an effort to combat the condition, which is detected early.

“As my fans are aware, I recently suffered from six weeks of a severe cough followed by a return of another five weeks.

“Despite the fact that I was recovered from the illness and back on stage in Las Vegas, my wonderful doctor insisted on an MRI just to ensure that there were no issues.

“The MRI detected a cancerous spot on my left lung that requires removed. It’s incredible chance (and a skilled doctor) that it was caught so early.”

Postponed Performances

He has delayed a string of planned live performances, but indicated he would be back on stage by mid-February for his long-running residency in Las Vegas.

He added: “The medical team do not believe it has spread and I’m taking tests to support their conclusion. So, that’s it. Chemo is not needed. No radiation. Just chicken soup and classic TV.

“I’m eagerly awaiting until I rejoin my second home in Las Vegas for our special weekend performances.”

Decades in the Spotlight

Manilow is currently in the 16th year of a concert series in Nevada. The singer has enjoyed a career spanning many years in the public eye and revealed he is gay in 2017, after marrying his longtime partner and manager in secret in 2014.

The pair were in a private romance for in excess of 35 years. Last year, Manilow reflected on how crucial his husband had been to him during his ascent to stardom in the 1970s.

“During my rapid rise to fame, it was just overwhelming. And, you know, going back to an lonesome hotel suite, you can get into a lot of trouble if you, you know, you’re alone evening after evening,” he said.

“But I found my partner right around when it was taking off. And I was spared from having to go back to those lonesome rooms. I had a person to be vulnerable with or to share joys with.

“I wish that newcomers today don’t have to go back to those hotel rooms by themselves, because you can make poor choices. I never did. But it was pretty lonely until I met Garry. And then it was fun.”
