Three members of law enforcement perished and at least 15 others were hurt in an apparently deliberate blast caused by gas at a country home in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The detonation occurred as officers and emergency crews approached the residence in the vicinity of Verona to enforce an removal notice for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

All three victims who died served in the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were arrested at the site and another man who ran away subsequent to the incident was located not long after. Each of them have been transported to medical facility.

The detonation could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the scene showed the property left as a mass of wreckage.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that efforts had been made to displace the three family members in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The head of the Veneto region, the regional head, explained the residence was under an removal notice due to financial obligations accrued by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to engage the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the officers arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the residents set off the blast.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Commander Papagno told reporters.

A gas canister had been activated, and the blast precisely impacted our officers,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also found at the site, the interior minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

The wounded by the incident comprised eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a firefighter.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

The official believed the explosion had taken place on a story above the entrance and told the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the explosion, he mentioned personnel had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas canisters being activated”.

Neighbor Statements

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors stated to reporters, adding that the trio had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in commemorating the trio of personnel who had died in the service of their country.
