Anthony Barry Reveals The Approach: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.
In the past, Anthony Barry competed for Accrington Stanley. Today, he's dedicated on helping Thomas Tuchel claim the World Cup trophy in 2026. His path from player to coach commenced as an unpaid coach for Accrington's Under-16s. He recalls, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he was hooked. He had found his destiny.
Staggering Ascent
Barry's progression stands out. Starting as Paul Cook’s assistant, he built a standing with creative training and great man-management. His club career included Chelsea and Bayern Munich, plus he took on international positions across multiple countries. His players include big names such as world-class talents. Now, with England, it’s full-time, the “pinnacle” in his words.
“All begins with a vision … But I’m a believer that passion overcomes challenges. You envision the goal but then you bring it down: ‘How do we do it, each day, each phase?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a methodical process enabling us to maximize our opportunities.”
Focus on Minutiae
Dedication, particularly on fine points, is central to his philosophy. Toiling around the clock all the time, he and Tuchel challenge limits. Their methods involve mental assessments, a strategy for high temperatures ahead of the tournament in North America, and creating a unified squad. Barry emphasizes “Team England” and avoids language like “international break”.
“It's not time off or a pause,” Barry notes. “It was vital to establish a setup where players are eager to join and where they're challenged that it’s a breather.”
Greedy Coaches
He characterizes himself along with the manager as highly ambitious. “We aim to control all parts of the match,” Barry affirms. “We strive to own the entire field and that's our focus most of our time to. It’s our job not just to keep up with developments and to lead and create our own ones. This is continuous focused on finding solutions. And to simplify complexity.
“We get 50 days together with the team prior to the World Cup. We must implement a complex game that gives us a tactical advantage and explain it thoroughly during that time. It's about moving it from concept to details to knowledge to execution.
“To create a system for effective use in the 50 days, we must utilize the whole 500 we’ll have had after our appointment. In the time we don’t have the players, we have to build relationships with each player. It's essential to invest time in calls with players, we need to watch them play, feel them, touch them. Relying only on those 50 days, we won't succeed.”
World Cup Qualifiers
Barry is preparing ahead of the concluding matches for the World Cup preliminaries – versus Serbia in London and in Albania. England have guaranteed their place at the finals with six wins out of six with perfect defensive records. Yet, no let-up is planned; quite the opposite. This period to build on the team's style, for further momentum.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the style of play must reflect the best aspects from the top division,” Barry says. “The physicality, the flexibility, the physicality, the integrity. The national team shirt should be harder than ever to get but comfortable to have on. It ought to be like a superhero's cape and not body armour.
“To make it light, we have to give them a system that lets them to play freely similar to weekly matches, that feels natural and encourages attacking play. They should overthink less and focus more on action.
“There are morale boosts available to trainers at both ends of the pitch – building from the defense, closing down early. However, in midfield on the field, that section, we feel the game has become stuck, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared currently. They understand tactics – structured defenses. We are really trying to focus on accelerating the game in that central area.”
Passion for Progress
His desire to get better is all-consuming. When he studied for his pro license, he was worried about the presentation, as his cohort included stars such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he went into the most challenging environments imaginable to improve his talks. One was HMP Walton in Liverpool, where he also took inmates in a football drill.
Barry graduated in 2020 at the top of the class, with his thesis – The Undervalued Set Piece, in which he examined numerous set-plays – was published. Lampard was among those impressed and he hired Barry as part of his backroom at Stamford Bridge. When Frank was fired, it was telling that the club got rid of nearly all assistants but not Barry.
Lampard’s successor at Chelsea was Tuchel, and shortly after, they secured European glory. After Tuchel's exit, the coach continued under Graham Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he got Barry out from Chelsea and back alongside him. The Football Association consider them a duo similar to Southgate and Holland.
