A Tragic Shift Just One Year Has Made in the United States

Twelve months back, the environment was entirely different. Ahead of the US presidential election, thoughtful citizens could recognize America's significant faults – its inequities and inequality – however they still could see it as the United States. A free society. A place where legal governance held significance. A nation headed by a respectable and upright leader, despite his advanced age and increasing frailty.

Nowadays, in late October 2025, many of us scarcely know the country we reside in. Individuals believed to be unauthorized foreigners are detained and shoved into vehicles, occasionally refused legal rights. The East Wing of the White House – is being torn down for a grotesque event space. Donald Trump is persecuting his political rivals or alleged foes and requesting federal prosecutors transfer a huge total of citizen dollars. Uniformed troops are dispatched across metropolitan centers on false pretexts. The Pentagon, relabeled the War Department, has practically freed itself of regular press examination while it uses possibly reaching close to a trillion USD from citizen taxes. Institutions, legal practices, media outlets are submitting from leader's menaces, and billionaires are treated like members of the royal family.

“America, just months before its quarter-millennium anniversary as the globe's top democratic nation, has fallen over the brink into autocracy and totalitarianism,” an American historian, commented this past summer. “Ultimately, faster than I believed likely, it transpired here.”

Every morning starts to new horrors. It is hard to comprehend – and distressing to accept – how deeply lost our nation is, and the rapid pace with which it occurred.

However, we understand that the president was legitimately chosen. Even after his highly troubling initial presidency and even after the warnings that came with the understanding of the conservative plan – following Trump himself said publicly he planned to rule as a tyrant only on the first day – sufficient voters chose him instead of his Democratic opponent.

Frightening as the present situation are, it's more daunting to understand that we have only been three-quarters of a year into this presidential term. How will another 36 months of this deterioration leave us? And suppose that timeframe transforms into a more extended duration, as there is no one to stop this ruler from determining that additional tenure is necessary, maybe for security concerns?

Granted, all is not lost. There will be congressional elections in 2026 that may establish an alternate governmental control, in case Democrats retake either chamber of parliament. There exist government representatives who are attempting to apply certain responsibility, like Democratic congressmen who are launching an investigation regarding the effort to cash appropriation from the justice department.

And a leadership election in 2028 could begin our journey to healing just as the prior selection put us on this disappointing trajectory.

We see countless citizens demonstrating in urban areas throughout communities, as they did last weekend during anti-authority protests.

Robert Reich, stated lately that “the slumbering force of the US is stirring”, exactly as before after the Communist witch-hunt era during the fifties or amid the sixties activism or during the seventies crisis.

During those times, the tilting vessel ultimately corrected itself.

The author states he knows the signals of that awakening and observes it occurring at present. As evidence, he points to the recent massive protests, the extensive, multi-faction opposition regarding a broadcaster's firing and the largely united refusal by journalists to accept the defense department’s demands they only publish what is sanctioned.

“The sleeping giant always remains asleep before specific greed grows too toxic, an specific act so contemptuous toward public welfare, specific cruelty so disruptive, that it is forced except to rise.”

It's a positive outlook, and I value the author's seasoned opinion. Maybe he’ll turn out correct.

In the meantime, the major inquiries remain: will the nation regain its footing? Is it possible to restore its status internationally and its adherence to the rule of law?

Or do we need to admit that the national endeavor functioned for a period, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?

My pessimistic brain suggests that the latter is correct; that everything could be finished. My positive feelings, though, advises me that we must try, by any means possible.

In my case, working in journalism analysis, that means encouraging reporters to commit, more completely, to their mission of scrutinizing authority. For some people, it may be participating in congressional campaigns, or organizing rallies, or discovering methods to protect ballot privileges.

Less than a year ago, we lived in a very different place. Twelve months later? Or three years from now? The truth is, we are uncertain. Our sole course is to attempt to continue fighting.

What’s Giving Me Encouragement Today

The interaction I have with students with aspiring reporters, that are simultaneously hopeful and realistic, {always
