A minimum of 64 civilians lost their lives in a law enforcement action against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's past.

Four police officers lost their lives during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives reported. Over 80 people were detained.

Intense confrontations erupted when around 2,500 security personnel entered the area on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho countered with shooting, igniting obstacles and using drone-dropped explosives, officials confirmed.

The UN Human Rights Office said it was "horrified" by the law enforcement raid, urging "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Mission Consequences

The informal settlements close to the aerial transportation hub is regarded as the central command of a major criminal organizations.

Local authorities stated no less than 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Many residents were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Community members have described the elevated neighborhood - housing around 300,000 people - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.

The Red Command group have been expanding their influence in the area, expanding narcotics distribution networks and control of the hillside favelas.

Local law enforcement said more than 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were confiscated in the mission, along with multiple guns.

The joint operation by various security forces was preceded by a year-long investigation.

Numerous alleged criminals are considered affiliates of a group from the Brazilian state who are at the moment taking refuge in the city.
